We got a new window display at the store

I snapped up this old school racer for £43 off ebay.

I took the bird to a Porsche show, she was stoked.

I saw the new 911 Sport Classic that I was very happy about.

Unfortunately it's unlikely i'll ever be able to afford one.

Bank Holiday Weekend

This weekend I had to act like a grown up and go to my girlfriends nieces wedding. I ended up drinking most of a bottle of whiskey and watching the Eurovision song contest with one of her mums mates.

Here's how me and the missus looked at the end of the evening, she was way more pissed than me!

On Sunday we shook of the hangovers and headed over to HUB. Unfortunately I got there too late to witness Manhead dominating the street comp but in plenty of time to see the vert comp, the highlight of which was Andy Scott on fine form, witness for yourself:

So since my last Blog effort I've been up and down the country again. I went up to Scotland to MC at the Renfrew skatepark opening which was a bit of a nightmare to be honest. I blew another tyre out on the van, had a shit nights sleep in Travellodge, it rained on and off, the Genny played up and to top it all off I forgot the Genny. Luckily the Police had it and it was returned to HSS and didn't cost me a penny.

Wingy was up staying for a few days last week and Manhead and Scotty popped round so we got the barbecue on. Scotty poked the fire, Wingy cooked, Manhead ate houmous and I put my bike together:

This weekend was a scorcher so I've been out to the coast, stayed at this swanky manor. Went to Whitby and Scarborough just chilling in the sun and eating too much!

This week I'm building a new block down at Subvert and hopefully I'll get in the mood to go skating at some point as I haven't really been into it for the past few weeks.

I just had a week snowboarding out in Mayrhoffen with Churchill, Nowik and All Terrain Trev. Obviously with that crew you're going to have a pretty good laugh, in fact I pretty much spent the whole week pissing myself. Constant viewing/quoting of Eastbound and Down didn't rerally help matter. Everyone took some whopper slams but Trevs one below was the only one captured on film! ENJOY.

I had one day at home to wash some clothes etc and it was off to Blackpool for Easter Camp with Nev. It was a rad one as all the kids were cool although I think I've fucked my toe playing games of skate with them. Obviously I lost every single one but 5 kickflips in a day and victory on the 1/4 pipe just about saved me some face!

This weekend I'm catching up some work but also considering a cycling mission while the weather is so nice, you never know this might be our summer, I'd hate to miss it!

Fuck me this is going to be an epic blogathon!

Ok so since the last post there was War of the Roses which was predictably sick and loads of people made the journey, even though it was snowing on the Sunday. The coverage will be in the next Sidewalk so no need to cover it here.

Other than that I've pretty much been working on all the events for the year and constantly writing e-mails. I got whacked with a tax bill which wiped out my savings for a new car, gutted. I did have enough left to buy a new 13" Macbook which I haven't even turned on yet, I should really get round to setting it up. In other good news my van and car both sailed through the MOT's with no cost to me, whatever people say about my car it's solid as hell. I've never had a car go straight through an MOT before but that's gone through both since I've had it.

The main event of the last month was my little sisters wedding down in Canterbury. I was expecting it to be a right stress but it was actually a really nice day, funny seeing so many family and family friends I haven't seen for years. She's now off on honeymoon to SF/Vegas and The Maldives (?).

We also had the Vans Euro video premiere in London which turned into a right piss up. Once again it was good to see so many old friends. I ended up getting way more drunk that planned only to find out there was no night busses back to Sidcup any more and getting home at about 4am. As I was supposed to be helping out with the wedding stuff first thing in the morning my Mum was none too impressed with her hungover son.

This week is my Birthday and I'll be hitting the ripe old age of 38. Fuck knows where the last ten years or so went but I'm sure it was fun! I'm also off snowboarding with Nowik, Churchell and All Terrain Trev next Saturday which is an unexpected bonus late in the season. I hope there's some good snow.

I've had a rad few weeks, just got back from ISPO in Munich and before that I was in France snowboarding with the Broadstairs crew.

There was 11 of us out to Avoriaz for the snow mission. Aside from a few travel difficulties it was a sick week - good snow, great food (thanks to Dan) and a powerful crew.

I'd like to inform you of all the wild and interesting things I've been doing over the last few weeks but I've mostly been writing a billion e-mails!

Somehow in between that I built (with a lot of help from Chris and Manhead) the new mini ramp down at Subvert in Castleford. I haven't got a pic of it finished so this one will have to do. It's nice to have a decent mini ramp to skate since the Works ripped theirs out and the Ripped closed down. Been skating it loads the last few days and I plan to pass a lot of the rest of the winter there!

The snows all fucked off for now but apparently there's more due sometime soon. Me and the Manhead got a few runs in down at Wakey park and it was actually a lot of fun. Here he is proudly displaying the card I got him:

Since my last post I contracted some weird infection in my cheek which left me with a swollen head and in a lot of pain, it also meant a course of antibiotics. It also meant I didn't get time to build the ramp at Subvert i was hoping to do before Xmas, I'm going to try and get it done next week.

Silent Will came and stayed for Xmas seeing as neither of us had much to do. Snowboarding on Xmas day up in Yad Moss was a lot of fun:

NYE was predictably messy - 70's night in Harpers, Broadstairs. I can't remember the last time I danced like such a spastic, I really threw some shapes about!

I just back from a weekend in Paris judging the street comp at the Tony Hawk show. I'm stoked Quiksilver asked me and it was a whole load of fun. I actually managed to do some tourist stuff in between judging and getting very drunk on free booze!

It was a really nice day as you can see, it was also pretty funny laughing at him falling off and generally being crap at riding a bike. Pretty fit for a 60+ old man though! I was knackered after the ride, my Mum phoned me a few days later to tell me Dad was still suffering!

Well there's not much to report really! I had a mellow one, just skated Wakey park quite a bit and a day out skating Micklefield too. On Saturday me and Manhead went down to X-Site for the day and mostly messed about on the plaza. Rain kept interrupting play so we'd just break out the remote controlled car i bought the other week of ebay, Porsche of course!

On Sunday I decided to go on a cycling mission out near Bridlington. It was a most enjoyable day! After a brief stop to roll round on my skateboard at the tidal barrier banks in Hull, I had lunch at the beach and proceeded to cycle up the coast from Brid, past Flamborough Head and back. a round trip of about 20 miles. The weather was amazing and I rode petty much non-stop for about 3 1/2 hours, when I got back to the van I pretty much collapsed though! Yesterday I didn't even leave the house because i was basically knackered. I'm regretting it today though, should have gone and skate the park while it was sunny! I spent my time wisely though, ordering up some stereo equipment for my van, I guess I'll be fitting that next week once I've finished with the car - refit side window and motor, fix boot catch, attach rear seat, clean and polish.

after the hectic summer it's wound down loads. Last week i went skating quite a bit which was weird! Went down to London and saw Dinosaur Jr who were on good form but i thought they were better in oxford, they didn't even play Just Like Heaven. After that we went to the Flip premiere but I didn't even see the film because I was too busy outside talking. Cheers to Nordberg for hooking me up with a hotel room or it would have been a mision.

Somehow I blagged it to judge at the Vans Downtown Showdown in Turin. I was stoked as I've never even been to Italy before, I wasn't so stoked that Air France lost my bag. The hotel we stayed in was a joke plus the night we got there the hotel was hosting a fashion mag launch party full of Italian MILFs. Also judging was Danny Wainwright who kept me amused with his Euro cynicism all weekend!

Inglorious Basterds - I've read some reviews on this film complaining that Tarrantino is re-writing history and it's not very accurate. It's a film you fuckwits, do you think Star Wars really did happen a long time ago in a galaxy far far away? It's there for entertainment purposes not education. I can't say enough good things about this film, it's one of his best. It has amazing characters and dialogue, I wasn't expecting to find myself laughing as much as i did. Brad Pitt is fucking brilliant in it, just as in Fight Club and Burn After Reading. Any film with funny Nazis in is alright with me! 10/10. I'm looking forward to seeing that District 9 film when it comes out too.

Leeds Festival - Firstly thanks to Relentless for the free pass. I only got there on Saturday evening and just watched La Roux and got drunk trying to put small people in a midget pen. I was in quite a good mood so didn't bother seeing Radiohead. Sunday had all the best bands/people i wanted to see: Little Boots, Jamie T, Friendly Fires, Florence and the Machine and Faith No More.

Unfortunately I got too cold and tired to bother staying for Faith No More but i watched their epic Reading performance on TV. Jamie T and Florence and the Machine were excellent as I expected and they were the main 2 I wanted to see. I've got to say that Friendly Fires were amazing and I've been listening to their album non stop since I got back, such a good band and live show. Little Boots I just went to see out of curiosity but thought she was really good lie, much better than she seemed on the V or Glastonbury footage I'd seen of her before.

The highlight for me was a stand-up comedian who I just happened to be wandering past, I didn't even catch his name but fuck me he was offensive!

Been way too busy/too busy relaxing to update this but here's what I've been up to:

At the start of August I had Darryl and Bex up to stay and we went on some skate missions up to Redcar and skated R-Kade and Hurworth bank which is my new favourite spot ever. Those two nearly killed me with the toughest skate regime I've been on for while. They were staying in order to run the Vans skatecamps which have been going really well and we're already planning for next year. Me, Nev and Manhead are currently in Blackpool running this weeks one which has been a real good laugh.

I just realised I haven't posted anything on here since I got back from Cuba so it's time for another epic catch up:

I had a few days after Cuba to catch up on evil e-mails and work on events like UK Champs and Concrete Carnival before heading off on the Relentless Ride with Us Tour. I've got to say that although the trip was super tiring it was a lot of fun. 7 days on the road hitting up mostly concrete parks and a few indoor spots with a crew of around 30. I think at the peak of it we had 2 vans and 3 cars! The weather on the whole wasn't too bad and we had very little trouble trying to find places to camp. The coverage of this one will be out in the next few issue of Sidewalk.

We ended up at NASS which despite being wet was one of the best ones I've been too. Seems like loads more faces were there this year and the VIP area was a welcome refuge and party zone. Seeing Stu Graham fuck himself was a nasty point but he took it all in his stride. It also provided the opportunity to hi-jack one of the Relelentless Land Rovers to go and pick him up from hospital which allowed me and Jerome a little late night comedy off-roading. The Goliath Ramp took a beating and watching Scotty win that was joy. The Vans crew all did well - Manhead got second in Street with Grove in 3rd. Raemers was on form for the win. Chris Oliver was in no real state to defend his title as it was his Birthday weekend! I missed the girls comp due to driving duties but Lois got 3rd i think.

After that I went down to stay with Churchell for a couple of days. we had a bromantic night at TGI Fridays followed by the cinema. We went to see the Bruno film which is pretty ridiculously funny, like a 90 minute gay joke!

I had a few days to catch up on sleep/work before this weekends Young Guns comp which went down a storm. We had about 80 entrants from as far as Aberdeen. I was shocked at the standard and consistency of the top guys, there'll be an edit up on MPORA tmw. VANS IN CUBA

I'm not going to write some long essay about our trip to Cuba as you'll see the footage soon enough and there's an article coming in Sidewalk. Here's just a few of my thoughts and observations:

I've travelled a fair bit but I have never been to anywhere like Cuba, I think it's fair to say there's nowhere else in the world like it. It's kind of a 50's timewarp but everythings 60 years old and fucked.

The architecture is stunning. You can hang out in 5 star hotels that haven't changed since they were built (mostly by the Mafia) and you feel like you're in a movie. Most notably the Hotel National which is where Sinatra sang as a cover for a huge mob meeting.

The people are poor as fuck but are some of the happiest and most positive people I've ever met. They all made us so welcome and everyone wanted to talk and ask about or lives and also what we thought of Cuba.

The food generally sucks especially if you're a vegetarian. Most stuff on the menus isn't available.

There's not really any trouble there and despite the fact street drinking/lurking is a national passtime, and not discouraged by the law as far as i could tell, you don't have gangs of kids running round town stabbing each other like we do here. Not coincidentally they have harsh punishments for pretty much every crime.

Being a skateboarder in Cuba really is as tough as you've heard. The one skatepark in Havana pretty much sucks. You can't actually buy hardware anywhere. Some place stock Vans and stuff but they're about $50 per pair and the average Cuban wage is £10 per month.

Booze and fags are cheap as hell.

Had a good one this weekend, skated the Ripped a bit on Saturday but spent most of the day lounging in the garden. Sunday I skated Blackpool with Tez, Scotty and co which was good but pretty hot!

Next weekend is a hectic one. Going to Birmingham on Saturday for the Moaom Jam, then down to Barnstaple for the skatepark opening there, then the first few days of next week I'm down in Broadstairs getting some stuff done on my van and catching up with some old mates. Hopefully the weather will stay like this and I might even make it to the beach! Some of the Vans crew are heading to the Dorchester opening too.....

I don't really want to turn this into a blagging page but I just wanted to say thanks to Kellie at Oakley for sorting me out these prescription Frogskins, I'm seriously stoked on them!

Here's the latest addition to my fine stable of bikes, it's a 24" Se Quadanlge with Skyways. I"m just waiting for some white tyres to arrive to finish it off. I"m in a bit of a quandary as to whether I should keep it or sell it. Sensible offers to nic@backroomoperations.com!

This is the ongoing 24" beach cruiser. I've literally just got to fit the white chain and it's good to go. I'm seriously stoked on this one and I'm probably going to keep it. It's taken a while to get all the bits together but I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

Oakley Independent Vert Series Stage 2 - Corby

After an hours less sleep than usual I packed up the PA and prizes and drove the 2 hours to Adrenaline Alley in Corby for the second installment of the Oakley UK indepndent vert series 2009. Myself and Wingy had taken on the role of organisers of this one and true to form he made me get there in plenty of time!

All the usual faces were in attendance with the exception of the mighty Dave Allen who is currently in Atlanta and Mr Pete King who was locked in his bathroom suffering after a messy night out! The 2 Sams were back from their recent success at Tampa ams and were of course on fine form.

The B-Group was a real mixed affair as usual with an age range from early teens to somewhere in the forties I suspect. Special props to Manfred and Zak Kutz (father and son) who made the long drive from Cornwall and both entered - skating a vert comp with your dad must be pretty rad! In a reversal of the Mt Hawke results Oakley Liddell came out on top with his power and some sick moves like fronstside stalefish as well as a backside kickflip. Second went to Joe the Skin who is coming on in leaps and bounds throwing together long runs with back to back airs. Third place went to Nick Hanson who is also improving fast and with an ever growing bag of tricks.

It seems as though the A-group has already turned into a battle for 3rd place as the Sams seem to be groing more untouchable by the day! Sam Bosworth was as usual blasting high but stayed low enough to the coping for just a second to pull a surprise blunt fakie out the bag, unusually he suffered a few too many early bails in the jams. Sam Beckett has a huge trick bag, smooth effortless style and is definitely one of my favourites (hence why I sponsor him!), every run was different and featured a really good mix of lip tricks and airs notably a huge array of flip stuff, the mandatory 540's and some very nice tailgrabs. It's always tough between these two but Beckett had the consistency on the day and that put him in first, making it 1 all in the series so far! In third place Scotty pulled some ridiculously tech lip trick runs together and as usual was a favourite with everyone present, it's the unpredictably of his skating that makes it so good to watch, you really have no idea what is coming next! frontside boardslides, frontside hurricane, egg plants, f/s feeble grind - all ridiculously hard tricks pulled with the usual Scotty ease! Fourth spot went to some old git called Sean Goff who displayed his usaul selection of fine tricks from every era of skateboarding as well as tag-timing MC duties with Wingy and later Rob Ayton. Becoming 37.....

Monday was my birthday and I was 37, I can't say I really give a fuck! For every disadvantage of getting older there seems to be an advantage to balance it out. Older, wiser etc, life just seems to get easier the older you get!

Anyway I went Porsche driving this week down near Loughborough and it was a lot of fun. I overtook some Lambos and Ferraris that were being driven by pussies! I'm hardly the next Stig but my instructor assured my I'm a pretty decent driver although I made him shout pretty loudly at me to 'BRAKE' a few times.

I drove a 997 Carrera identical to the one below. It was definitely fast but wasn't as fun to drive as my one! Although I didn't spend the whole time worrying it was going to blow up.

Home boy comes good on new ramp

Sunday 1st March saw the start of the Oakley UK Independent Vert series get underway at Mount Hawke in Cornwall.

The first in the series of the 4 vert comps for the season can sometimes be a little difficult, with winter taking its toll on knees and the amount skating that goes on through those dark months. But not this year, Spring had arrived, the weather was warm and the ramp was fresh as the daffodils in the car park. Complete with new roll-ins and a super fast surface the ramp rode like a dream. We were not to be disappointed with larger than usual competitors turnout in both A and B groups the stage was set for afternoon of pure Vert indulgence.

For most I think the fun came from the shear diversity of the B group with lots of improvement from many skaters but also some real crazy moments that kept things well alive on the entertaining side. For instance, how many times do you see someone roll towards the coping into a blunt and pull it in! Not many, definitely a first for me! B group skating always has been about the weird and wonderful things than can and usually do happen, long live the B group.

By the time we got to the big guys things were starting to get very gnarly indeed with most of the riders using the roll ins to send themselves into orbit way above the Mount Hawke floor. Some of the runs in the final jam blew me away airs reaching 10ft, Christ airs above head high, double flip Indy airs and double flip mute airs and yes I said double flips! We are now moving into an area where UK vert skating has never been before and things will only get better. The new ramp at Mount Hawke has only been up for 3 months so plenty of time for progression. The number of young riders is growing at a rapid rate and the drive in these guys is unlike anything I have seen in many years.

By the time we reach the final round in June the level of skating is going to be off the scale! So watch out Europe we are coming to get you!!

Last week I was sorting out the Oakley UK vert series which saw the first leg down in Cornwall this weekend. I didn't make it down but by all accounts it went off. Wingy even got punched in the head by a woman on a night out which would have been worth the drive alone.

Todd Congelliere was amazing here's a clip of him from '92. I remember seeing this and wanting to do every vert trick in it. I think i nearly lost my teeth, eyebrows and everything else on my face trying alley oop cab to 5-0 fakies, I never really got close. That trick is on my list of things I wish I'd done just once on a skateboard and it was purely due to that section.

We're at the ASr tradeshow which is pretty boring but yesterday we saw Cab, Hosoi and Buster Halterman skate the mini mega and today we watched Sal Barbier and Kris Markovich skate a jump ramp and Brophy win the highest ollie comp. I guess that doesn't happen everyday, plus there's loads of birds with not too much on!

It's been a while since I posted anything up here so it's another catch up!

I sold my Blue van and bought a Yellow one. This one's an '02 2.5TDi so it's faster and in better condition, looking forward to burning through France in it in a few weeks. I've fitted a bonnet bra and new front spoiler already. Further exterior plans include lowering, RS bodykit, colour coded mirrors, rear windows. Internally I'm not sure what to do you, I guess a better sound system and probably some back seats. Not going to have time to do it till next year now anyway.

Manhead had his first proper blast at snowboarding the other day over at Xscape, decided it was better to have a practice rather than leaving it till he was on the mountain! I wouldn't say he was natural but he certainly picked it up pretty quick.

Last week we built the mini ramp in the new Vans store in Leeds in a record time of two long days - me, Manhead and Tez. Andy Scott popped down and helped out a lot too, in return I helped him pick up some wardrobes from Ikea in the van! Sorry about the shit pic but it's dark in there:

TheUKSA mini ramp champs at X-Site in Skeg went really well and the whole weekend was a good laugh. Skeg crew certainly like a booze, good lads. Stoked on the Vans team performance as usual with Sweeney taking the win and about 5 others in the top 9. Nordberg was on fine form too. Check out James Gardners Ableye edit of the weekend here:

Bought new van, of course it's a Volkswagen.
Split up with girlfriend and she moved out.
Biscuits is my new lodger.
Started skating again after knee op.
Booked snowboard apartment for January.
Sorted out UK mini ramp champs.
Decided to get a new tattoo but never got round to it.
